Emile Rafael cut his teeth directing award-winning music videos in an impressive variety of genres, and he’s continued evolving every day since. He’s now using his sharp eye for visceral, emotive moments and graphic, atmospheric compositions to hunt down brilliant work in the commercial wild.
Prague-raised Emile Rafael says it was Tarkovsky’s post-apocalyptic Stalker that first inspired him to become a filmmaker. Mesmerized by the Russian auteur’s futuristic wasteland, Rafael still feels the pull of derelict buildings and places, despite the fact that—or perhaps because—there are numerous architects in the London-based filmmaker's family.
After a two-year stint as a producer, Rafael has shot numerous videos for stars including Katy B, X Ambassadors, Jamie N Commons and Stubborn Heart. Emile has collaborated with Nowness and I-D on an array of projects, and his work has been featured in SHOTS, The Beak Street Bugle, The Reel, 1.4, and Little Black Book, among others.
His NOWNESS film profiling writer Alan Moore was shortlisted for the D&AD Next Director Award and his video for MØ’s “Walk This Way” also earned him the trophy for Danish Music Video of the Year at the 2014 Danish Music Awards.
